“Don’t Run Away!”

“As Goliath moved closer to attack. David quickly ran out to meet him. Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.”

1 Samuel 17:48-49

For forty long days Goliath had taunted the armies of Israel, and for forty days, they ran away. So, what a shock it must have been when a young shepherd boy heard the same threats but did not run away. Instead, David ran toward the enemy!

The key to that mystery lies in David’s approach to the giant. Even after Goliath sneered in contempt and cursed David by the names of his gods, David declared, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies--the God YOU have defied.” David boldly announced that the Lord would conquer Goliath, and the whole world would know that the Lord is the One who rescues, NOT sword and spear. This was not David’s battle; it was the LORD’s!

David ran TO Goliath and proclaimed the truth with confidence because he knew WHO was with him. Did not Jesus promise us the same, I am with you always? So like David, we need not run away in fear when giants in our lives taunt us. No way! Run toward them and shout in their faces, “How dare you defy the GOD who dwells in me?”

Then dance with joy as you watch your Goliaths stumble and fall face down!
