“But will God really live on earth? Why, even the highest heavens cannot contain you. How much less this Temple I have built!”
1 Kings 8:27
Solomon certainly understood something of God's majesty as he poured out his heart during the Temple dedication. "Will God REALLY live on earth?" And even if he did come to live on earth, how could He ever squeeze Himself into a structure built by man? Yet even before Solomon breathed a word of his amazement, the LORD's presence had already filled the Temple he built! (v. 11)
I cannot fathom the wonder of God dwelling in that Temple either. However, even more astounding for me, is to think that the presence of that same God now dwells in me! REALLY? How could the God who created the entire universe and everything in it live in MY heart? And even more amazing, why would He want to?
Perhaps part of the answer lies in WHO created the two temples. Man created the Temple that gave the Israelites a place to worship. But GOD created the temple of my body that gave HIM a place to dwell. That Almighty Creator God became MY Loving Savior the day I invited Him into my life, and He continues to remind me every day that I am HIS special treasure.
So, I too stand in awe that GOD would REALLY live in my temple.
I will never understand why, but I will be grateful forever—REALLY!
