“Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake…but Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Jesus up, shouting, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ Jesus responded, ‘Why are you so afraid? You have so little faith!’ Then He got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly all was calm.”
Matthew 8:24-26 NLT
Jesus was sound asleep when suddenly a fierce storm struck the lake. But notice that after Jesus rebuked it, the storm suddenly became calm. So, Jesus’ question to the disciples seems to be valid, “Why are you so afraid?”
Recently, Jesus had been amazed by a Roman officer’s faith, but now He questioned His disciples’ faith. The Roman knew Jesus had authority, so he trusted Jesus’ simple commands. However, the disciples were afraid of the storm OUTSIDE their boat, even though the all-authority Jesus was INSIDE their boat!
We all experience storms of life that suddenly come out of nowhere. Those fierce winds around us can fill us with fear, even though the One inside us can fill us with us peace. We just need to decide on which we will focus—the storm or the One Who calms the storm.
Fortunately, the disciples cried out to Jesus, and His response indicated the reason why they were afraid—they had little faith. That little faith had been determined by their focus. However, when they turned their eyes from the storm to Jesus, everything changed. The very storm that came suddenly, left suddenly!
If we focus on the storm that suddenly comes outside our boat,
We’ll miss the calm that suddenly comes from the One inside our boat!
