“But As for Me”

“My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets…But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love."

Psalm 59:14, 16

It was the last Friday of my first month at the counseling center when I encountered this psalm. I had just cried out to God to fulfill HIS purpose for me, (Ps. 57:2) And then I chose to sing with joy about His unfailing love in which I chose to trust.

But THEN came Saturday—it was NOT a good day! As for me, I did NOT make good choices! I forgot about God’s unfailing love and CHOSE instead to trust myself. That choice produced disaster in the relationship I was trying to fix!

Since that painful day, I’ve noticed a certain phrase repeated often throughout the Psalms. No matter what was going on around them, the psalmists did NOT succumb to their surroundings. Instead they wrote, BUT as for me, I will… choose a different way!

Every moment of every day, I too have opportunities to choose a different way. People around me may treat their fellow humans unkindly or bad-mouth their leaders. But as for me, I can choose to speak kind words, even when I disagree. People around me may choose lifestyles I don’t like, but as for me, I can choose to relate to them in love, even when I don't love their behavior.

I will never be asked to give an account of other people’s choices

But as for ME, I’m responsible for MINE!
