“I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”
John 1:51 NLT
In Moldova we lived in a two-story apartment located on the eighth and ninth floor. Although there was an elevator in the building, sometimes my legs preferred to take the stairs! Besides, the open windows along the stairway gave me a better view, as I climbed from the ground to the top floor.
That stairway is a picture of what Jesus is for us. In his Gospel, John called Jesus the stairway between heaven and earth. Christmas celebrates the point in history when God became flesh and Jesus became the Connector between earth and heaven.
Hundreds of years before Jesus came, Jacob the Patriarch had a dream of angels ascending and descending on a stairway to heaven. Now because of Jesus, instead of angels gliding up and down on a stairway, Truth flows freely on every rung of THE Stairway.
The Stairway…what a unique title for Jesus’ role. I thought of John’s description as I climbed those 187 stairs to my apartment each day, with each level expanding my view of the city. Likewise, climbing THE Stairway unfolds a heavenly view of Truth that becomes clearer with each step.
For sure, the world’s speeding elevator could carry us upward in great style, but we’d not only miss the beautiful view, but no elevator could ever get us to Heaven!
So, this Christmas let us choose the Stairway GOD provided.
The higher we climb in relationship with HIM, the better the view…HIS view!
