“From the Bottom of the Barrel”
“You have endowed him with eternal blessings and given him the joy of your presence. For the king trusts in the LORD. The unfailing love of the Most High will keep him from stumbling.”
Have you ever felt like you’re at the bottom of your barrel of strength? Have your choices ever sent you on a downward spiral with no idea how to reverse the spin? I understand—and so did the author of this Psalm.
Enemies constantly threatened David’s life, and he too lived with consequences of his own choices. David felt discouraged at times, and yet I notice David declared GOD the Source of his hope. “How the king rejoices in your strength….” (v 1) David focused on GOD’s strength instead of his own weakness.
“For you have given him his heart’s desire…You have endowed him with eternal blessings and given him the joy of your presence.” (v 2, 6) David focused on the One who cared about his heart!
“For the king trusts in the LORD…we celebrate your mighty acts.” (v 7, 13) David trusted in GOD instead of himself and celebrated GOD’s power instead of his own!
FOCUS is our most important choice in life, especially when we’re sitting in darkness at the bottom of a barrel. No matter how helpless we may feel, we still have power to change the direction of our gaze.
So, if you’re at the bottom of a barrel, ask yourself—
Will I look inward or upward? Will I focus on me or on HE?
