“Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, ‘Get up and eat!’ He looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay back down again.”
1 Kings 19:5-6
Elijah had just experienced the most profound miracles of his life when a woman’s threats sent him running away. Alone in the wilderness, he became so discouraged he wanted to die—so he laid down and slept.
How often have we quoted Elijah, “I have had enough, LORD!” (v. 4) We too run away from our problems AND from people, ending up alone and discouraged. But I love the next line in Elijah’s story, “…as he was sleeping, an angel touched him…” In the middle of his darkest hour, GOD’s hand reached out, just as it always has!
GOD’s hands formed Adam and lovingly sewed his clothes. GOD’s hand touched the lepers, the deaf, the blind, and the dead. So, no matter what situation sent you running away to your bed of discouragement, those same transforming Hands will touch you, even while you are sleeping!
Normally if a person is touched while sleeping, their first response is to open their eyes. God touches with the same purpose. The angel touched Elijah and said, “Get up and eat!” When Elijah opened his eyes, he saw the bread and water. God touches you in your discouragement because He wants you to SEE what HE has lovingly prepared, just for you!
So, even if you have been sleeping, respond to HIS touch and see HIS provision!
