"Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you respond in the right way. But if you refuse to respond correctly, then watch out! Sin is waiting to attack and destroy you, and you must subdue it.”
Anger shows on one’s face…you cannot hide it! The longer you hold on to anger, cherishing those get-even feelings in your heart, the furrows plow deeper and deeper into your face!
Cain’s anger issue showed, and God addressed it with loving advice: respond in the right way. If Cain refused to respond correctly, sin could destroy him! God gave the same warning in Ephesians 4:26-27, admonishing us to deal with anger the same day, not allowing it to control us, “…for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil.” God loves us so much, He gives clear instructions as to who is responsible in every situation: YOU respond, YOU let go of anger, YOU forgive, YOU do it the same day. Don’t let the Devil get his ugly foot in your door!
Cain was angry over a botched offering. It is interesting that Psalm 4:4-5 ties those two items together: “Don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you…Offer proper sacrifices, and trust in the Lord.” Only by trusting God can I respond correctly to my anger and offer sacrifices that are pleasing. The choice is mine.
