“Be Careful…Don’t Break God’s Heart”

“But be very careful! You did not see the Lord’s form on the day He spoke to you from the heart of the fire on Mount Sinai. So do not corrupt yourselves by making an idol in any form…”

Deuteronomy 4:14-15

Here are those words again, only this time, be VERY careful! When God spoke to the Israelites on Mount Sinai, He made sure they did not see His form. God did not want His people to worship an idol that looked like Him, He wanted them to worship HIM!

Moses went on to describe possible forms they could worship…people, animals, birds, fish, or the stars of heaven. But those images belonged to the whole world. The Israelites possessed something no other people had…a God who rescued them from Egypt in order to make them his very own people and his special possession. (v 20) They had the privilege of relationship with the One they worshipped!

Moses interrupted his idol discourse to mention that he was not allowed to go into the Promised Land. Then we hear his plea intensify as it poured from his own grieving heart, one that did not want them to miss God’s blessings too. “Be careful not to break the covenant the Lord your God has made with you. Do not make idols…The Lord your God… is a jealous God.” (v 23-24) Moses’ hurting heart pleaded…You are GOD’s special treasure…don’t give your love to another…PLEASE don’t break God’s heart!

You too are HIS special treasure…

So, please be VERY careful…don’t break God’s heart!
