“You have been so gracious to me and saved my life…But I cannot go to the mountains. Disaster would catch up to me there, and I would soon die…
Afterward Lot left Zoar because he was afraid of the people there,
and he went to live in a cave in the mountains with his two daughters.”
Genesis 19:19, 30
When Abram and Lot’s herds became so large that they could no longer live together, Lot chose for himself the fertile plains and left his uncle the desert. It wasn’t long before Abram went to battle with five kings to rescue his nephew, and again pleaded for Lot’s life when Sodom was about to be destroyed. As the angel of the Lord was escorting his family out of the city, Lot begged him not to send them to the mountains for fear disaster would kill him there.
Fearing disaster, Lot had begged to be sent to a little village, but he ended up leaving that place because he was afraid of the people. Interestingly, Lot then went to live in a cave in the mountains!
Lot started on a downward spiral the day he chose for himself. Even though his life had been spared twice by his interceding uncle, Lot lived in fear, a fear that eventually sent him to the very mountains he had dreaded. It was there, his two daughters became pregnant by their own father. Lot’s life ended in a cave of his own making, in the very mountains he had feared.
Beware…selfish choices could eventually lead to life in a cave!
