“Lot chose for himself the whole Jordan Valley to the east of them.
He went there with his flocks and servants and parted company with his uncle Abram.”
Genesis 13:11
Abram and Lot each owned so much livestock that the land could not support both households together. As fights arose between their herdsmen, Abram wisely made a humble offer: Lot could choose of any section of land he wanted, and Abram would move the opposite direction. Striking words reveal that “Lot chose for himself…” the lush, well-watered valley and left the drier, more barren land for his uncle. The choices of both men had great impact on their futures.
When Lot had moved away to his garden paradise, Abram and God grew even closer. After giving up the choice land to his nephew, God promised Abram ALL the land he could see as his permanent possession. And even though Abram had just given up his closest relative, God promised him descendants that could not be numbered!
On the other hand, Lot’s choice led him to live among people who were extremely wicked, and he eventually had to be rescued by angels from Sodom’s destruction. The last time we hear of Lot in the Old Testament, he was living in a cave in the mountains! (Genesis 19:30)
Today’s lesson: Humble choices always move you closer to God…Selfish choices just may land you in a cave!
