“Tell the people of Israel: ‘Be careful to keep my Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is
a sign of the covenant between me and you from generation to generation.
It is given so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.’”
Exodus 31:13
The Sabbath is so important to God, that He called it the “sign of the covenant.” The covenant is simple: GOD promises to keep His Word, if I trust and obey His Word! Therefore, if the Sabbath is a sign of that covenant, then my response to REST will clearly show God whether I trust His way or mine.
With that understanding, I ask myself a hard question: Can I trust God enough to choose regular rest, or will I trust my own efforts and work harder and longer? The choice to rest comes from a heart that has first chosen to trust. And that trust is a sign to God that I am keeping my part of the covenant.
This past week I was highly stressed, trying to finish MY work on MY schedule! Nothing seemed to flow; writing was going nowhere! Often during those moments of frustration, I could hear Jesus’ gentle reminder, “But, MY yoke is easy.” Finally, I saw the truth…I was trusting in the gift more than in the Giver! Through tears I once again chose to show God the sign of our covenant…I chose to trust HIS way and REST.
In fact, from now on, I plan to make that daily choice…would you like to join me?
