“On the seventh day, having finished his task, God rested from all his work.”
Genesis 2:2
God resting, what an intriguing concept! Why would God need to rest? After all, isn’t He God Almighty, the All-Sufficient, All-Powerful One? He only had to speak the words, “Let there be…” and the world was created. So, why would God feel tired and need to take a break?
Besides all the power names of God, there are others that perhaps could show us why God rested. The Shepherd heart of God wants to LEAD His weary sheep to green pastures and still waters. The Father heart of God wants to SHOW them exactly how to rest when they get there. So, from the very beginning, God made Himself an example we could follow.
A loving God knew that His children were going to need refreshment on their wilderness journey. That same loving God knew that centuries later His creation would wear themselves out running to and fro with stressful work. Therefore, He chose to SHOW us what to do. What a loving example so early in His story…God rested. Accordingly, don’t you think we can trust God’s upcoming examples in the rest of His Book?
