“In the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaints…
And as Aaron spoke to the whole community of Israel, they looked out toward the wilderness. There they could see the awesome glory of the Lord in the cloud.”
Exodus 16:7, 10
What amazing grace! Since leaving Egypt, the children of Israel had been complaining every step of the way! And now, they get to see God’s glory? How could He even think of showing such grace to them after all their ungrateful behavior?
I am so thankful God’s grace is not based on our behavior, but on HIS love. We hear that love in every word, as God describes His wilderness daily food plan. When the people wondered what the manna was, they were told, “It is the food THE LORD has given you to eat.” Even though the Israelites deserved punishment, God gave them grace.
It was because of God’s grace the people saw the glory of the Lord. First, they witnessed His glory every morning in the manna He provided for that day (v7). And second, they saw the awesome glory of the Lord in the cloud as they looked out toward the wilderness. (v10)
This story encourages me…I need not fear the wilderness in my own life. I can face that difficult place with confidence, for THERE I will learn to appreciate the glory of the Lord as the cloud of His presence hovers over me. And THERE I will gather the daily Manna my Father has already provided…all by HIS grace!
