“Identity Crisis”

“But Moses protested to God, ‘Who am I to appear before Pharaoh?

Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?’”

“Moses protested, ‘If I go to the people of Israel and tell them,

‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’

Then what should I tell them?’”

Exodus 3:11, 13

Perhaps images of the Egyptian’s murder were flashing through Moses’ mind that day when he protested God’s call with, “Who am I?” God simply responded with a grace-filled promise, I will be with you.” Moses had no idea the power of those five words.

Instead, he continued with a Who are you? protest. Interestingly, there seems to be a connection between his two questions. Moses did not know who he was because he did not understand who God was. To solve his identity crisis, the second question needed to be answered first.

Too often we are so focused on finding our own identity, that we overlook God’s! What is HE like? How does HE act? What’s in HIS heart? If we spent time listening to His Words, we would hear the beat of His loving heart. If we walked closer to Him, we would see the twinkle of joy in His eyes and proud smile on His face. THEN we would relax in our true identity...being God’s special treasure.

Like Moses, our identity is not found in what we do, but in who we do it with! Together with the One who promised to be with us, we discover our identity. And as Moses learned, it’s from THAT relationship the miracles begin to flow!
