“‘Look!’ He said. ‘The people are united, and they all speak the same language.
After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!’”
Genesis 11:6 NLT
The people who migrated to Babylonia had set out on a mission, “Let’s build a great city for ourselves…this will make us famous…” (v4) However, when God came down to visit their construction site, He made a powerful observation: these people were united in purpose and they spoke the same language. He knew that with those two ingredients, nothing would be impossible for them!
We hear many hateful languages blaring through our news channels today. Words of criticism, gossip, bitterness, jealousy, and resentment seem to fill our world. Those dialects all originate from the same self-centered objectives we read in Genesis 11, building for ourselves and trying to make ourselves famous. Being linked together in that kind of a quest will undoubtedly result in confusion and defeat, just like it did for the people at the Tower of Babel.
What if instead we were united in a mission to demonstrate God’s character to the world? What if we all spoke His language of love and grace? Imagine the power of people living in THAT unity, speaking THAT language. God’s words in Genesis 11 would then define us: “… nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!”
