“But Moses told the people, ‘Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord
rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again.
The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.’”
Exodus 14:13-14
My husband and I often remind each other of boundaries with the phrase, “You’re in my yard!” Those words are inevitably prompted by one of us trying to take over a job that was the other’s responsibility.
I see another yard story unfolding in today’s verses as Moses’ words address a huge misconception. Thinking they were alone at the Red Sea, the Israelites panicked, assuming THEY were responsible for their own deliverance. However, the plan that Moses outlined clarified there were TWO parties involved in the story and each had distinctly different responsibilities. The people’s job was to simply stand still, stay calm, and watch the Lord rescue them. The Lord’s job was to fight for His people. If both did their jobs well, this enemy would never be seen again!
The moment these people tried to step into GOD’s yard, they felt overwhelmed and wanted to give up. Is that so surprising? Instead of sticking to their own assigned task, they tried to take on God’s!
Our Loving Father gives us the same simple assignment today, one that will keep us from panic…stand still…stay calm…and watch the LORD work! In other words, stay in your own yard and stop trying to climb into God’s!
