“You will destroy Ai as you destroyed Jericho and its king.
But this time you may keep the plunder and the livestock for yourselves…”
Joshua 8:2
We recently dog sat our daughter’s little Jack Russell. During our morning walks, I was shocked how tightly I had to hold the leash to keep Buttercup from chasing after every squirrel or fellow canine in sight! Without a strong hold, Buttercup would have pounced on whatever she wanted.
Achan acted like Buttercup when Israel conquered Jericho…he pounced on the forbidden gold and silver because he wanted it. However, IF he had obeyed God’s instructions, only a few days later, he could have had all the plunder he wanted! Instead, Israel suffered defeat and Achan lost everything. Why didn’t he wait?
God promised Abraham a son, but his attempt to create the miracle himself brought chaos. Why didn’t he wait? Saul impatiently offered sacrifices that only Samuel was to offer, and his disobedience cost him the kingdom. Why didn’t he wait?
I too find it difficult to wait for GOD’s timing, so there have been many Buttercup scenarios in my lifetime! However, when I anxiously dart here and there, I’m grateful my Master holds me securely, so I won’t pounce too soon. His loving hugs spare me the question, “Why didn’t I wait?”
“…no eye has seen a God like you,
who works for those who wait for him!”
Isaiah 64:4
