“…For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.”
Matthew 12:34-35 NLT
Ever say something and then wonder, “Where did that come from?” Jesus answered that question—from the treasury your heart! So instead, perhaps I should ask, “Who filled that treasury?
In the financial world, a treasury is a place of deposit and disbursement of collected funds. That money is kept in a safe place because it’s valuable to the one who deposits it. And each person’s deposit determines what their disbursement will be.
What a picture of my heart—a treasury of my valuables. So, if MY job, MY possessions, or MY ideas are what I value most, then my treasury will be filled with ME deposits; and therefore, the disbursements from my treasury will be ME-focused words and actions. Disbursements from my heart come only from the “treasures” I deposit!
I can also store in my treasury all the devastating words and crushing disappointments I’ve experienced. However, instead of depositing thankfulness for GOD’s care during those difficult times, what if I deposited anger and bitterness? Imagine what kind of attitude and words would be disbursed from THAT treasury!
When I inventory the deposits in my treasury, may I never find that I valued my bitterness more than forgiveness, or my anger more than peace.
Oh Father, help me carefully choose the valuables for my treasury.
May my deposits and disbursements always bless You and others!
