“Jesus prayed this prayer, ‘O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.’”
Matthew 11:25 NLT
I had just bowed before God this morning to discuss the excruciating pain of someone I dearly love, when suddenly I remembered what Jesus had called His Father in this prayer. For a moment, I sat silently in thought, “If Jesus addressed His own Father as Lord of heaven and earth, then I’d better pay attention. After all, who would know the Father better than the Son?”
We all have family and friends experiencing unbelievable pain in their lives. And if we watch even a minute of world news, we’re overwhelmed by the unending suffering that’s provoked by the unprecedented evil on our planet. But where’s the power to give us hope?
Jesus knew that answer—His Father was Lord of heaven and earth! Let’s allow the meaning of that title to sink into our hearts for a moment. Perhaps we can believe God is Lord of heaven, but what about Lord of earth? However, if JESUS calls His Father “Lord,” then He IS Lord!
So, whether the devastation is in the earth of our cities, or in the earth of our individual lives, we can trust the LORD of heaven AND earth!
Jesus knows His Father well, and His Father is my Father.
If Jesus declares Him “Lord of heaven and earth,” so can I!
