“Tassels of Remembrance”

“Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord. When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the Lord instead of following your own desires…as you are prone to do…

I am the Lord your God!”

Numbers 15:38-39, 41

God never wanted to lose relationship with His people, so the tassels on their garments were to remind them to follow HIS ways instead of their own. However, notice God did not sew tassels in the garments…the people were responsible to set their own tassels in place to be seen easily.

God knew a time would come when His people would no longer have the Tabernacle of His Presence and may live hundreds of miles from the Temple. But they would never be removed from God’s reminders. Every morning while dressing, tassels would brush their faces. Every step they took, tassels would gently tap their legs. And, wherever they went, tassels would be swinging from other Jewish garments around them…all whispering God’s message, “Remember Me!”

Moving through the generations, God knew we too would need reminders to follow His ways, so He made sure we have tassels. Our tassels may not tap on our legs, but they buzz in our pockets, ring in our ears, and outline our schedules hour by hour. Like the Israelites, we are responsible to set them in place. Our tassels can recite the Word, sing songs of worship, or remind us to pray or meet with the Family. When we set our tassels responsibly, we too will hear God’s whisper all day long, “Remember Me!”
