“The Place of Atonement”

“Whenever Moses went into the Tabernacle to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from between the two cherubim above the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—that rests on the Ark of the Covenant. The Lord spoke to him from there.”

Numbers 7:89

I was surprised by this beautiful nugget tucked in at the very end the twelve-day dedication of the Tabernacle. The purpose of God’s new dwelling is demonstrated here…He spoke to Moses from between the two cherubim above the Ark’s cover, the place of atonement. What a stunning revelation of truth: “The Lord spoke to him from there.

Let’s consider the meaning of THERE. First, it was between the cherubim that were above the Ark’s cover. THERE was called the place of atonement, the place of cleansing or forgiveness of sin. What an important symbol for us to understand today…the place where we hear God’s voice most clearly is from a pure heart. The person who walks in purity, recognizes God’s voice, and hears it more frequently.

Equally important to remember are the contents of the box under the place of atonement. Inside the Ark were two items…the Ten Commandments and a jar of manna. Truly God’s voice is only heard from the place of cleansing, but what we hear rests solidly on the Truth of the Word and the faithfulness of His provisions. Purity will unveil our ears to hear God’s Word and our eyes to see God’s gifts.

So, may we never allow anything to keep us away from the place of hearing and seeing.
